The North of Lebanon

The Northern coastline of Lebanon constitutes approximately 37% of the total Lebanese coast. It is a popular recreational spot with also artisanal fisheries activities, coastal urban centers, farming lands, factories and industries as well as some more pristine and protected environments.

The Lebanese case study presents therefore a wide range of issues and conflicting uses from an economic, social, political, regulatory and ecological perspective. Here, a more sustainable coastal management strategy for this area will require a more interdisciplinary and integrated management process. Activities within the Pegaso project case are expected to build on the strategy for the coast of North Lebanon that started six years ago.

In the coming months, the Pegaso team will create a Coastal Forum with the objective of bridging the gap between the scientific community and the decision makers and continue working to address the main coastal issues. Tools such as "Development of Potential Scenarios" and "State of the coast using indicators" will facilitate visualizing a more complete picture of present and future challenges for this coast.

The case supervisors are Manal Abou Dagher and Manal R. Nader, University of Balamand.
