Introduction
Following the process to define the potential role of IUCN in the
Mediterranean region with respect to the integrated management of
water and river basins, a Workshop took place in Malaga on 8 and
9 April 2002, with the participation of interested IUCN members
and potential partners in the region. The workshop participants
analysed the situation from different angles and perspectives, and
sought to identify the main fields of opportunity in building bridges
between all sectors, such as planners, users and conservationists,
concerned with sustainable water management.
This workshop was supported by
the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Italy, and by the Junta de Andalucia,
and the Ministry of Environment, Spain.
Results
Through 14 different presentations, participants from water Ministries,
Public Works, international organisations, donors, science and conservation,
exposed their policies, cases and experiences from different sectoral
perspectives, analysing the relationships between river basin management,
water for food, and related environmental problems.
During the second part of workshop,
a preliminary analysis about the possible regional role of IUCN
on this topic was briefly presented, giving way to the establishment
of two working groups which discussed about the main issues and
opportunities for IUCN in mainstreaming environmental considerations
in river basin and water management.
