Turkish delegation visits protected
areas in Andalucia
15
December 2005
A
Turkish delegation made up of eleven
representatives from the National
Park of Koprulu Kanyon (Anatolia)
visited several protected areas on
Andalucia. This visit is part of a
World Bank and Global Environment
Facility programme that aims at promoting
experience exchange amongst protected
area managers. The IUCN Centre for
Mediterranean Cooperation and Junta
de Andalucia scheduled different visits
to protected areas in order to show
them different models of management,
in particular those that encompass
successful participatory processes.
The region of Andalucia was chosen
by the Turkish delegation due to its
high biodiversity, which share many
characteristics to Anatolia region.
They also showed interest in the the
Unesco declaration process towards
a 'Transcontinental biosphere reserve
between Andalucia and Morocco' that
will likely take place in 2006. The
IUCN Centre for Mediterranean Cooperation
was also requested by the Turkish
representatives to assist on designing
and implementing management plans
for protected areas in their country.
This delegation is commissioned to
take in good practices on protected
areas management in order to prepare
a document to become a reference point
for the rest of protected area managers
in the Turkey.
