This
CD Rom contains the complete set of information relative
to IUCN activities with regard to legal aspects of governance
in the Mediterranean beyond territorial seas.
The IUCN Centre for Mediterranean Cooperation has been
working for 18 months on this relatively « new
» issue. In this endeavor, IUCN’s initiative
aims at establishing a dialogue involving all actors
at stake in the region. In the CD-rom you will find
the up-to-date status of our work, the first results
of the process that launched and the remaining challenges
lying ahead.

1.
The general issue of governance of the Mediterranean
Sea
In this first part, essential information for the good
comprehension of governance of the Mediterranean Sea
is available. There is also available here, a general
document presenting Governance of the Mediterranean
Sea beyond territorial seas in English, French and Spanish.
Two case studies are also downloadable as well as other
interesting documents including bibliography and relevant
web links.

2.
Governance in the Mediterranean beyond territorial sea
The second part contains the complete information relative
to the workshop on Governance in the Mediterranean Beyond
Territorial Seas organized by IUCN (Malaga, Spain) on
15 and 16 March 2004. This workshop, which was the first
meeting of the Mediterranean Marine Law Specialist Group
(MMLSG), also benefited from the participation of key
institutions and international organizations in the
region and enabled the identification of means and actions
to undertake in order to improve governance for conservation
and sustainable use of the Mediterranean Sea. The information
contained in this part includes presentations, minutes,
conclusions as well as other interesting documents.

3.
Marine protected areas in the high seas
This third part contains the complete information concerning
the workshop on marine protected areas in the high seas
held in Malaga, Spain on 15-17 January 2003. This workshop,
organized in partnership with WWF, gathered experts
on marine protected areas in the high seas at the global
level, and aimed at identifying a strategy to promote
marine protected areas in the high seas to ensure a
long term conservation and sustainable use of marine
biodiversity and ecological processes located in areas
beyond national jurisdictions.
Also
available in the following pages, there are the contributions
and presentations of participants as well as the proceedings,
executive summary and the Plan of action.
