Tunisia

In Tunisia, the Environmental Education Programme aimed at developing the knowledge and competence of young people and local populations, and at creating attitudes and values respectful of biodiversity.

Meetings and training sessions were organised to mobilise teachers and animators in many regions of the country to conserve biodiversity. These training sessions were an important factor for the development of environmental education in the country, making teachers and educators aware of environmental threats and the role of the community in safeguarding biodiversity.

A center for awareness, education and research in the field of conservation of endangered plants, as well as for meetings and training sessions for women, was built in collaboration with the Ministry of Social Affairs.

Multidisciplinary training sessions were delivered to beneficiaries relevant to sustainable management of medicinal plants, apiculture, rabbit breeding and aviculture. Visits to other sites and development associations showed the population of Rhim, from the programme area, what was done elsewhere.

An information day on the “Role of Parks in the Conservation of Biodiversity” was organized to sensitize the local population and authorities on the importance of protected areas and natural parks in the protection of biodiversity.

Four different workshops were organized with:

  • communities of the region to learn about their relation with nature, their daily problems, their economic situation and their know-how.

  • women to sensitize them to the importance of sustainable use of natural resources.

  • children through activities, such as paintings and games, to improve their awareness of the protection of the environment.
