During Phase I of the Programme, it was noted that the information on biological diversity in the region was lacking or inaccessible to the public and even to professionals. The only information which was circulated came from other regions and did not provide ample or detailed information pertinent to North Africa. The local population was little aware of the richness of the natural heritage of the region and of the role it could play in its conservation and sustainable use.
Based on these conclusions, it was decided that the essential part of the biodiversity environmental education part of the Programme would focus on the production of information on biodiversity in the region, through a series of fact-sheets in Arabic and English or French. Themes were identified and each country produced a number of fact-sheets, which contributed to the collection of information on 125 different subjects. These environmental education biodiversity fact-sheets were created for the public at large and can be understood and used by children of about twelve to fourteen years of age. They were distributed to schools in the region and at various events.
A number of other awareness and environmental education activities took place in each country, including the training of local communities on cultivation and sustainable use of medicinal plants, fruit trees, as well as other biodiversity resources such as carob trees and honey.
