  Centres of Biodiversity - Libya

Because of Libya's harsh environmental conditions (dryness and high temperatures, etc), plant and animal life is usually found in isolated patches (biodiversity centers or hotspots) where sufficient rainfall and/or humidity occur with unique richness and endemism.

The objective of the Centres of Biodiversity Programme was to select a priority ecosystem and study and evaluate its ecological and biodiversity status and address the threats affecting its conservation and sustainable use. Two sites were chosen, which represent a mountain-plain interface of arid and semi-arid habitat types: The Abu Ghailan National Park and the Bir Ayyad Protected Area.

The activities were the following:

  • Definition and assessment of the state of biodiversity in the two sites leading to the creation of a conservation guide based on sustainable use.

  • Definition of flora and fauna of special socioeconomic and ecological values in the project sites and in Libya, with special focus on medicinal plants.

  • Definition of the socioeconomic impacts of the project on local population and promotion of active involvement of local population.

  • Training and capacity building of personnel and others, on the assessment of biodiversity and the management of the biodiversity centers in question.

  • Networking among concerned participants in the project and with other institutions of similar interests.
