  Women and Biodiversity - Algeria

In Algeria, participatory discussions were initiated with the rural community in the commune of Oulad Taga with an emphasis on the needs of women.

Participatory methods with the rural women were experimented in the development of agriculture, forestry and pasturing. Women were also supported in the development of crop cultivation and animal husbandry.

New alternative techniques for energy were introduced, particularly those linked to the reduction in the consumption of wood, such as the introduction of improved stoves.

During Phase III, the Programme's field work was centered on women and medicinal plants. The three pilot projects on the cultivation of medicinal plans took place in women-run farms. Each beneficiary committed to growing medicinal plants on her arable land. The entire crop was sold to local herbalists. This provided a launching pad for gender empowerment and improvement of livelihoods.
