  Women and Biodiversity - Morocco

In Morocco, participatory discussions with an emphasis on needs of women were initiated with the rural community in the village of Tororte within the Toubkal National Park, and several actions were undertaken to involve women in the management of natural resources.

Collective gas ovens were distributed to the women of the village, diminishing the consumption of wood from traditional ovens. Rural women have to walk far to collect wood, which constitutes their primary chore at the expense of other income generating activities. Therefore, the improved ovens helped increase their livelihood and reduce the pressure on the forest.

Collective gas ovens, which consume less wood than traditional ovens, were distributed to women.

Women were trained in honey making and their know-how in weaving was highlighted by the creation of a workshop for confection and learning of weaving skills. Literate girls who had left school helped develop women literacy.
