The IUCN Centre for Mediterranean Co-operation is currently working
on the process leading up to the 5th World Parks Congress : "Benefits
beyond Boundaries" that is to be held in Durban
(South Africa) between 8th -17th September 2003 (WPC 2003).
Our Centre is the IUCN's focal point for the Mediterranean to ensure
that our input from the region is put forward to WPC 2003. Accordingly,
a series of regional activities are being launched. However, these
activities are in no way intended to replace any measures taken
by members on a national level on either protected areas or the
World Congress. Quite the contrary. The activities are intended
to contribute towards integrating a truly Mediterranean position
and vision that will be presented at Durban. As a result, we have
contacted the Barcelona Convention RAC/SPA Centre, the Emerald Network
of the Council of Europe, regional governments and foundations,
as well as other organisations.
